Anyone seeking to snoop into their designs is only inviting destruction upon themselves; a battle appearing well fought at the start, inviting celebration, will turn out to be a trap for would-be assassins. Yet their vulnerabilities are not purely fictional. Both have blind spots none are privy to. Yoritomo fears his younger brother, who defies prediction, and Tanetomo fears the master served. Neither make a show of this, of course, ensuring that all remain none the wiser. On the daily they wear masks of confidence and impenetrability, cavorting with their foes in Yoritomo’s office, advancing ever forward to the next political battlefield.
