Inaba and Agyo enjoy New Year’s games and festivities in the shrine office. Japanese New Year’s has many traditional children’s games—top spinning, kite flying, shuttlecock paddling—all said to be, in essence, rituals wishing for their growth. The current activity of choice for these two, however, is kakizome, or the first calligraphy of the year, where one writes one’s new resolutions and goals. What challenges await them in the future? What fortunes and blessings? Excitement and anticipation animate their brushes as they swish ink across traditional paper, filling it with hopes and dreams.

「はい、採点です！　お雑煮を食べすぎたアギョウ君にはぴったり……ぴょ、ぴょーんっ！？」
「イナバだって、ひとのこと言えたお腹じゃないだろーっ？　狛犬ポイント、大・減・点だーーっ！」
社務所内で、新年の遊びを満喫するイナバとアギョウ。
独楽、凧上げ、羽子板、これらは遊びを通して子どもたちの成長を祈願する意味が込められているという。
その中で、書き初めは目標や抱負を決め願う行いと言われていた。

各々の思いを載せた墨が、半紙を楽しそうに染め上げていく。
