“Doctor, let it be known that I, Yasuyori, will protect you with my very life!”
“No need to get that intense about it. Do you really think your death will solve anything? Though… I do admire your dedication.”

Yasuyori is ready and more than willing to lay down his life protecting military doctor Shennong. This willingness is a result of both his need to atone and his personal philosophy of impermanence—flowers will fade and leaves will fall. Such sentiments are strangely in agreement yet not in agreement with Shennong’s heartfelt desire that no one else fall in battle. Because Yasuyori believes himself to be a mere grunt no different from a weed alongside the road, he risks his life, fights like hell, and finds himself deeply wounded once again. Shennong extends a hand and tends to his wounds because he believes it is that weed alongside the road that is most important of all. Thus, Yasuyori risks his life even more to protect Shennong, and the doctor risks his life to protect Yasuyori in kind. Indeed, for both of them, it is only on those nights after they have protected the deeply wounded when they can finally be cloaked in sleep’s gentle embrace.

「軍医殿の警護、このヤスヨリが見事果たして見せ申す。たとえこの身に代え申しても！」
「まったく、気負い過ぎだよ、ヤスヨリくんはさ。死んで花実が咲くものか、だろ？　……真面目な所は嫌いじゃないがね」
軍医シンノウの警護のため、己が危険を顧みない下士官ヤスヨリ。
その根底にあるのは「花は散るもの、葉は落ちるもの」というヤスヨリの無常観と贖罪意識。
他の誰も戦いで倒れてほしくないというシンノウの願いとは近いようで遠く、そして遠いようで近い。
己を「道端の雑草と変わらない一兵卒」と思うゆえにヤスヨリは、自身の命を賭して精勤し、今日もまた深く傷つく。
だがシンノウは手を差し伸べ癒すのだ、「道端の雑草こそを何より大事に思う」が故に。
だからヤスヨリは軍医のことを、一層命を賭しても守るだろう。
シンノウもまた、そんなヤスヨリを命に代えても守るだろう。
彼らは、深く傷ついた誰かを守った夜にだけ、ぐっすりと優しい眠りに落ちられる。

「軍醫大人，我悌順會完美地完成護衛任務的。就算是要用我的性命來交換，也在所不惜！」
「真是的，你太過要求自己了，悌順。人死了就什麼都沒了，不是嗎？……不過，我並不討厭你認真的態度喔。」

為了保護軍醫神農，而不顧自身安危的下士官悌順。他之所以如此，是因為他抱有「花會謝，葉會落」的無常觀點及罪惡感。那似乎與神農不想讓任何人戰死的願望既類似卻又不同。正因為悌順認為自己只是「如草芥般的士兵」，所以才會賭上性命來精進自我，於是今天也加深了傷痕。但神農仍會出手治癒他，因為他「認為路邊的野草才是最重要的」。所以悌順才會拼命地保護軍醫。而神農也會拼命地保護悌順。只有在成功保護了身負重傷的人的夜晚，他們才能安然入眠。

“我悌顺将出色完成护卫军医大人的任务。以身犯险也在所不惜！”
“真是的，太拼命了吧，悌顺。毕竟死了一切就都完了，是吧？虽然我不讨厌你认真的一面”

为了护卫军医神农，下士官悌顺不惜置自己于危险之中。这背后其实是悌顺那种“花将凋零叶将落”的无常观和赎罪意识在起作用。这和神农那种不希望任何其他人倒在战场的愿望既相似又相去甚远。悌顺认为自己是“与路边杂草别无二致的一介兵卒”，因此拼命努力工作，今天也再一次身受重伤。然而，神农却伸出了援助之手，为其治愈伤痛，因为他深信“路边的杂草才最重要”。所以悌顺才会更加不惜一切保护军医吧。神农也会为了这样的悌顺而不惜生命去守护。只有在保护身负重伤者的夜晚，他们才能安然入睡。
